Huawei Launches First Wide Foldable Phone, Pura X Max

Huawei has made waves in the smartphone industry with the launch of its Pura X Max, the first wide-style foldable phone, which officially debuted in China today. This release comes ahead of similar products expected from tech giants Apple and Samsung, positioning Huawei as a frontrunner in this emerging segment of foldable devices.

The Pura X Max features a unique passport-style foldable design, distinguishing it from traditional foldables currently on the market. The device boasts a 5.4-inch cover display with an impressive peak brightness of 3500 nits. When unfolded, users are greeted with a spacious 7.7-inch internal display that reaches a brightness of 3000 nits. Both screens support a versatile adaptive refresh rate ranging from 1 to 120Hz, ensuring smooth transitions for various applications.

There are two versions of the Pura X Max available for preorder, catering to different user needs and preferences. The standard model is priced at 10,999 yuan (approximately $1,613) for the 12GB memory and 256GB storage configuration. Alternatively, a variant with 512GB of storage is available for 11,999 yuan (about $1,800). For those seeking more capacity, the Pura X Max Collector’s Edition starts at 12,999 yuan (around $1,906) for the 16GB RAM and 512GB storage setup, with a higher-end option featuring 1TB of storage priced at 13,999 yuan (approximately $2,053).

On the hardware front, the Pura X Max is powered by Huawei’s own Kirin 9030 Pro chipset, ensuring robust performance. The device includes a generous 5,300mAh battery that supports fast charging capabilities: 66W wired and 50W wireless. Photography enthusiasts will appreciate the triple camera system, which features a 50-megapixel main camera with a variable aperture, a 50-megapixel telephoto lens, and a 12.5-megapixel ultra-wide shooter. The Pura X Max runs on Huawei’s latest HarmonyOS 6.1 and is compatible with the Huawei M-Pen 3 Mini stylus, integrating a suite of AI-powered functionalities aimed at enhancing the user experience.

Huawei’s entry into the wide foldable market raises significant questions for competitors like Apple and Samsung, who are also reportedly developing their own versions of wide-style foldables. Speculations suggest that Apple’s foldable iPhone and Samsung’s wider iteration of the Galaxy Z Fold may not hit the market until the latter half of 2026, giving Huawei a notable advantage in terms of market presence and consumer engagement.

While Huawei has yet to confirm whether the Pura X Max will be available outside of China, the device’s successful launch could raise concerns for its rivals, who will need to respond strategically to this new design trend. As the smartphone landscape evolves, the Pura X Max sets a high bar for future foldable devices, combining innovative technology with practical functionality.
